  "text": "Annie Bergman var m\u00e5lare, tecknare, grafiker, illustrat\u00f6r och barnboksf\u00f6rfattare, aktiv under en stor del av 1900-talet.\n\nAnnie Bergman f\u00f6ddes 1889 i Li\u00e8ge d\u00e4r hennes far William Bergman, som var l\u00f6jtnant i artilleriet, arbetade med vapenkonstruktioner under \u00e5ren 1889\u20141894. Efter en kort period i Paris flyttade familjen till Stockholm, d\u00e4r fadern var f\u00f6dd och uppvuxen. Annie Bergmans mor hette Ingeborg Billquist och var fr\u00e5n G\u00f6teborg. Hon hade en konstn\u00e4rlig l\u00e4ggning och m\u00e5lade bland annat porslin. \u00c4ven fadern var intresserad av konst, och b\u00e5da f\u00f6r\u00e4ldrarna st\u00f6dde Annie Bergmans val att utbilda sig till konstn\u00e4r.\n\nEfter studentexamen i Stockholm 1907 genomgick Annie Bergman f\u00f6rberedande konstutbildning p\u00e5 Tekniska skolan (nuvarande Konstfack) och Caleb Althins m\u00e5larskola. H\u00f6sten 1908 antogs hon som aspirant vid Konstakademien, d\u00e4r hon spenderade fyra \u00e5r som elev. Vid akademien studerade hon figurteckning f\u00f6r Axel Jungstedt och m\u00e5leri f\u00f6r Oskar Bj\u00f6rk. Hon l\u00e4rde sig ocks\u00e5 grafik av Axel Tallberg p\u00e5 akademiens etsningsskola, och gjorde d\u00e4r g\u00e4rna landskap i akvatint- och linjeetsning. V\u00e4gen gick \u00f6ver Tyskland, med uppeh\u00e5ll i Berlin, Dresden, N\u00fcrnberg och M\u00fcnchen, d\u00e4r hon studerade konst p\u00e5 museer. V\u00e4l framme i Italien stannade hon ett \u00e5r, och bes\u00f6kte Florens, Siena, Rom, Neapel och m\u00e5nga mindre orter. Hon fascinerades av folklivet, landskapet och byarna, vilket senare visade sig i tr\u00e4snitt med motiv h\u00e4rifr\u00e5n, till exempel *Pratande gummor, Firenze* fr\u00e5n 1916. V\u00e5ren 1914 fortsatte hon till Paris, d\u00e4r hon gick p\u00e5 museer och studerade p\u00e5 Acad\u00e9mie de la Grande Chaumi\u00e8re. Hennes tidiga tr\u00e4snitt byggde p\u00e5 svarta konturlinjer och svarta ytor mot vit botten, utan volymskapande graderingar, ofta med m\u00e4nniskor i helfigur och ofta dekorativt stiliserade. Med tiden b\u00f6rjade hon ocks\u00e5 g\u00f6ra f\u00e4rgtr\u00e4snitt, och h\u00e4r kom blomstermotiven att dominera. Inf\u00f6r julen 1929 startade hon det som hon sj\u00e4lv kom att kalla \u201dkortfabriken\u201d. Hon skar i linoleum sm\u00e5 jul- och gratulationskort som trycktes med sked p\u00e5 tunt papper och monterades p\u00e5 dubbla kartonger, Med tiden skaffade hon ocks\u00e5 en egen tryckpress. Korten s\u00e5ldes genom konst- och pappershandlare \u00f6ver landet. Ur denna anspr\u00e5ksl\u00f6sa verksamhet utvecklades med tiden en stor m\u00e4ngd uts\u00f6kta blomsterbilder i tr\u00e4- och linoleumsnitt, ocks\u00e5 i st\u00f6rre format och tryckta i begr\u00e4nsade upplagor. Dekorativa och f\u00f6rest\u00e4llande p\u00e5 en g\u00e5ng, med en fl\u00e4kt fr\u00e5n de japanska f\u00e4rgtr\u00e4snittens eleganta stilisering, se exempelvis bilderna *Mimosa* fr\u00e5n 1936 och *Sl\u00e5n* fr\u00e5n 1956. Hennes bilder trycktes i tidskrifter s\u00e5som *Grafiknytt* och *The Studio*, och gavs \u00e4ven ut i grafikmappar av F\u00f6reningen f\u00f6r Grafisk Konst. Fem blomsterbilder fick ocks\u00e5 utg\u00f6ra f\u00f6rlagor till frim\u00e4rksserien *Nordiska vildblommor* 1968.\n\nAnnie Bergman sl\u00e4ppte dock inte m\u00e5leriet helt. Hon m\u00e5lade g\u00e4rna portr\u00e4tt, och s\u00e4rskilt barnportr\u00e4tt, men \u00e4ven landskap och blomsterstilleben. Teckning ut\u00f6vade hon b\u00e5de som f\u00f6rstudium f\u00f6r m\u00e5leri och grafik och som illustrationskonst. Hon illustrerade artiklar i tidningar, tidskrifter och b\u00f6cker, och gjorde ofta bilder f\u00f6r barn, bland annat i serien *Barnbiblioteket Saga*. Hon skrev ocks\u00e5 egna barnb\u00f6cker som hon illustrerade med egna bilder, och gav ut p\u00e5 olika f\u00f6rlag. Bland dessa kan n\u00e4mnas *Dalh\u00e4sten*, som utkom f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen \u00e5r 1923, *Sagan om j\u00e4tten och barnen*, 1924, *Sagan om kattungen som kom bort*, 1933, och *Kasper Kul och andra \u00e4ldre och nyare sagor p\u00e5 vers och prosa*, 1942. Denna produktion h\u00e4ngde ihop med att hon tyckte om att ber\u00e4tta sagor, g\u00e4rna f\u00f6r sina syskonbarn. Sj\u00e4lv hade hon inga barn, och hon gifte sig inte heller.\n\nUnder 1920- och 1930-talet tecknade Annie Bergman ocks\u00e5 bilder fr\u00e5n Stockholms teaterliv, f\u00f6rst till teaterkr\u00f6nikor f\u00f6r *Bonniers veckotidning*, och senare f\u00f6r *Svenska Dagbladet*. Det handlade om rollportr\u00e4tt, till exempel G\u00f6sta Ekman som Hamlet och Anders de Wahl som Erik XIV. Teaterbilderna kunde ocks\u00e5 vara gjorda i tr\u00e4snitt, s\u00e5som en av Ingolf Schanche som Hamlet.\n\nUnder sin l\u00e5nga konstn\u00e4rsbana st\u00e4llde hon ut sin konst m\u00e5nga g\u00e5nger, bland annat separat i Stockholm 1925, 1927 och 1941. Hon \u00e4r bland annat representerad vid Nationalmuseum i Stockholm, museet Albertina i Wien, Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs i Paris och Centre de la gravure et de l&apos;image imprim\u00e9e i Bryssel.\n\nAnnie Bergman var aktiv i konstn\u00e4rsf\u00f6reningar som F\u00f6reningen Original-Tr\u00e4snitt, F\u00f6reningen Svenska Konstn\u00e4rinnor, Grafiska S\u00e4llskapet, d\u00e4r hon var med i styrelsen fr\u00e5n 1933\u20141965, och i Svenska Konstn\u00e4rernas F\u00f6rening. Hon var ocks\u00e5 aktiv i S\u00e4llskapet Nya Idun, som arkivarie, i konstutskottet och som f\u00f6rfattare till spex och kupletter.\n\nHon testamenterade delar av sin f\u00f6rm\u00f6genhet till Grafiska S\u00e4llskapet som idag delar ut Annie Bergmans stipendium till tr\u00e4grafiker.   "text_eng": "Annie Bergman was a painter, drawer, graphic artist, illustrator, and author of children\u2019s books. She was active for much of the twentieth century.\n\nAnnie Bergman was born in Li\u00e8ge in 1889. Her father, William Bergman, was a serving lieutenant in the artillery there and was engaged in weapons production during the 1889\u20141894 period. Following a brief stint in Paris the family moved to Stockholm, where William Bergman had grown up. Annie Bergman\u2019s mother was called Ingeborg Billquist and hailed from Gothenburg. She was artistically inclined and would paint, sometimes on porcelain. Annie Bergman\u2019s father was also interested in art and both of her parents supported her choice to become an artist.\n\nAfter graduating from school in Stockholm in 1907 Annie Bergman attended a preparatory art course at Tekniska skolan (now Konstfack or University of Arts, Crafts and Design) and at Caleb Althin\u2019s school of painting. In the autumn of 1908 she was accepted as an applicant at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where she spent four years as a pupil. At the Academy she studied figure drawing with Axel Jungstedt and painting with Oskar Bj\u00f6rk. In the Academy\u2019s school of etching she also learned how to make graphic art with Axel Tallberg, with her preferred medium being aquatint and etched landscapes. Her female fellow students included [](Elsa Bj\u00f6rkman-Goldschmidt), [](Siri Derkert), [](Harriet L\u00f6wenhjelm), Ragnhild Nordensten, Gerda Nordling, and Elvi Tond\u00e9n. In 1917 Annie Bergman stopped producing copper engravings and instead began to print woodcuts.\n\nUpon completing her time at the Academy Annie Bergman travelled to Italy in 1913. She went via Germany, stopping in Berlin, Dresden, N\u00fcrnberg, and M\u00fcnich, studying the art in the museums. She remained in Italy for a year, visiting Florence, Sienna, Rome, Naples and many other smaller places. She was fascinated by streetlife, the landscape, and the villages, and later this found expression in her woodcuts, such as *Pratande gummor, Firenze*, from 1916. Annie Bergman continued on to Paris in the spring of 1914, visiting museums and attending classes at Acad\u00e9mie de la Grand Chaumi\u00e8re. On the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 she then travelled home to Sweden where she remained until the opportunity of a three-month trip to Spain arose in 1921.\n\nAnnie Bergman primarily focused on graphic art. In her early woodcuts she mainly used black contour lines and black spaces against a white background, without expansive gradations, often comprising whole-bodied human figures and frequently decorated in a stylised manner. She gradually began to produce colour woodcuts and these were dominated by flower motifs. Just before Christmas 1929 Annie Bergman began what she came to call the \u201ccard factory\u201d. She cut pieces of linoleum into small Christmas and congratulations cards which were printed using a spoon on thin paper and then mounted on double-thick cardboard. She eventually came to own her own printing press. Her cards were sold at art- and paper shops nationwide. Her modest enterprise gradually developed into a major production of exquisite images of flowers, both woodcuts and linocuts, including larger sizes and printed in limited editions. These were simultaneously decorative and representative, with a touch of elegance lifted from Japanese colour woodcuts, clearly represented in *Mimosa*, from 1936, and *Sl\u00e5n*, from 1956. Her images were printed in journals such as *Grafiknytt* and *The Studio* and were also published as graphic art folders by *F\u00f6reningen f\u00f6r Grafisk Konst*. Five of her pictures of flowers also served as models for the series of stamps called *Nordiska vildblommor*, in 1968.\n\nAnnie Bergman did not gave up painting entirely. She was happy to paint portraits, particularly children\u2019s portraits, as well as landscapes and still lifes with flowers. She would make drawings as studies for her paintings and graphic and illustrative art. She supplied illustrations for articles in newspapers, journals, and books, and often produced pictures for children, including for the series called *Barnbiblioteket Saga*. She also wrote her own children\u2019s books, which she illustrated herself and which were published through various publishing houses. These include *Dalh\u00e4sten*, first released in 1923, *Sagan om j\u00e4tten och barnen*, published in 1924, *Sagan om kattungen som kom bort*, from 1933, and *Kasper Kul och andra \u00e4ldre och nyare sagor p\u00e5 vers och prosa*, published in 1942. This output resulted from her love of telling stories, especially to her nieces and nephews. Annie Bergman had no children of her own and she never married.\n\nDuring the 1920s and 1930s Annie Bergman also illustrated Stockholm\u2019s theatre life, initially for theatrical reviews in *Bonniers veckotidning* and subsequently for *Svenska Dagbladet*. These tended to be character portraits, such as G\u00f6sta Ekman playing Hamlet and Anders de Wahl playing Erik XIV. These theatre images were sometimes produced as woodcuts, such as the one of Ingolf Schanche playing Hamlet.\n\nDuring her extended period of artistic output Annie Bergman often exhibited her work, including solo exhibitions in Stockholm in 1925, 1927 and 1941. She also contributed to group displays of graphic art in Sweden and abroad. Her work can also be found in Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Albertina museum in Vienna, Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs in Paris, and Centre de la gravure et de l\u2019image imprim\u00e9e in Brussels.\n\nAnnie Bergman was an active member of artists associations such as F\u00f6reningen Original-Tr\u00e4snitt, F\u00f6reningen Svenska Konstn\u00e4rinnor, Svenska Konstn\u00e4rernas F\u00f6rening, and Grafiska S\u00e4llskapet, for which she served on the board from 1933-1965. She was also an active member of S\u00e4llskapet Nya Idun serving as the society\u2019s archivist, on its art committee, and as the author of humorous songs and sketches.\n\nAnnie Bergman willed some of her wealth to Grafiska S\u00e4llskapet,  who today award the Annie Bergman stipend to graphic artists who work in wood. Following Annie Bergman\u2019s death 85 of her drawings and sketches, along with around one hundred of her printed cards, were donated to the National Library of Sweden, which now houses a special Annie Bergman collection.\n\nAnnie Bergman was active until late on in her life. She died in 1987, aged 97. She is buried in Solna Cemetery.",
